Chalmers, Charlton Denial On Rising Rents Red Alert

Liberal Party of Australia

"The Albanese government is in denial on rent rises after the Treasurer and wannabe-Treasurer both publicly undermined industry warnings their higher taxes would flow to higher prices exactly as their Budget intended", said Shadow Treasurer, Tim Wilson.

Mr Wilson's comments follow Jim Chalmers and Andrew Charlton both dismissing National Australia Bank analysis stating that the government's Budget taxes will increase rents by up to 30 per cent.

"The Albanese government's Budget was explicitly designed to increase rents through higher taxes", Mr Wilson said.

"Now the Albanese government are denying their Budget dream isn't coming true".

"The Albanese government was warned their higher taxes would increase rents, and kneecap first home buyers and now it is happening they're gaslighting Australians because they've got their way".

"The government has achieved a rare quinella: higher rents, knee capping first home prices, fewer homes, falling prices and smashing confidence".

"The Albanese government should admit rising rents are by design, but like inflation they underestimated the harsh impact of their Budget and now rising costs are punishing struggling Australian households", Mr Wilson said.
