Changes to Council communication during Election Period

Ballot paper and pencil

Business will continue as usual in the lead up to the Council elections, however there will be temporary changes to Council's communication channels to ensure we comply election legislation.

Between 22 September and 24 October, the Local Government Act restricts Council's distribution and publishing of certain materials.

Content considered as "electoral matter" which relates to candidates and the achievements of council will not be published during this time. This includes material that:

  • publicises the strengths or weaknesses of a candidate
  • advocates the policies of the Council or of a candidate
  • responds to claims made by a candidate
  • publicises the achievements of the elected Council.

Posts or comments containing electoral material posted on Council's social media accounts will be removed.

Election information relating to the voting process, election office and links to the Victorian Electoral Commission will continue to be promoted during this time.

During the election period Council is also restricted from making decisions which could influence voters and have a significant impact on the incoming Council.

Social media

Throughout the election period Council's social media accounts will remain active. We will continue to post operational updates and information about events.

Facebook visitor posts will be temporarily removed and residents will be directed to private message our customer service team to assist with requests.

Due to the legislation we are unable to host or post materials considered to be "electoral matter", so they will be deleted from Council pages.

We will continue to post important information about COVID-19, service updates or disruptions and updates relating to the voting process.

We will also continue to post updates on Council's Twitter account regarding requests including trees, waste collections and road closures. If you need to lodge a request please send us a direct message or contact us on 1300 368 333.
