Changing Narrative This World Suicide Prevention Day

Tasmanian Government

On World Suicide Prevention Day, the Tasmanian Government is recognising the contribution of communities and organisations across the State for their commitment to preventing suicide.

Every year on 10 September, communities across Australia and around the world come together to mark this life-saving campaign.

This year's theme is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide", calling on people to transform how we think and talk about suicide.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing Bridget Archer highlighted the importance of the campaign, saying anyone can be affected by suicide which means prevention is everyone's business.

"Changing the Narrative on Suicide is a call to all of us to shift from silence and stigma to openness, empathy and action, to ensure those who are struggling feel heard and supported," Minister Archer said.

"Awareness, connection and compassion are some of our most powerful tools when it comes to ending the stigma around suicide and seeking help.

"This is so incredibly important because every life lost to suicide is one too many. Every life is a whole person, in all their complexity, who will always be remembered and who are sorely missed by their loved ones and communities.

"The State Government's Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023–2027: Compassion and Connection is well underway, supported with $3.75 million in ongoing funding.

"Through the Strategy, we're taking action - not just in moments of crisis, but well before people reach that point, by working to create communities where people are empowered and confident in their ability to support each other through life's challenges."
