Charges after robbery in Newcastle

Police have charged a man after a robbery near Newcastle overnight, NSW Police say.

About 11.40pm yesterday (Monday 10 September 2018), a man entered a service station on Sandgate Road, Shortland, and threatened a male service attendant.

The man allegedly took cash and cigarettes and left the store.

The attendant notified authorities before going outside where he allegedly saw the offender counting the money.

The man ran towards the attendant and there was a physical altercation, before he again ran away.

Officers from Newcastle City Police Area Command attended and a 30-year-old man was arrested after police used OC spray.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with aggravated robbery and resist police (x2).

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 11 September 2018).
