Charges after stand-off with police near Wollongong, NSW

A man – who allegedly armed himself with kitchen knives – has been arrested following a stand-off with police near Wollongong yesterday, NSW Police say.

Police from Wollongong Police District had been called to a home on Bon Accord Street, Corrimal, about 4.15pm (Thursday 23 August 2018), after reports of a domestic violence-related incident.

Police were told a woman and two children had left the premises; however, when they attempted to speak with a man he allegedly threatened them with a knife.

The 34-year-old man allegedly refused to comply with police directions and instead threw knives towards the officers.

Police established a perimeter and began negotiating with the man and about 4.45pm, a man surrendered to police and was arrested without further incidents.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with malicious damage, assault police, intimidate police, use of a weapon to avoid apprehension and DV offences.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 24 August 2018).
