Northern Territory Police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old male following an alleged aggravated assault in Katherine.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, 22 December, Katherine officers were tasked to a general disturbance, Northern Territory Police say.
On arrival, police located blood on the footpath. After making enquiries with some residents the officers then proceeded to track footprints and voices for approximately one kilometre through bushland in dark and boggy conditions, which resulted in them locating the victim and the alleged offender.
The offender was arrested at the scene.
The female victim, who is also pregnant, was conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Acting Superintendent Craig Garland said he was proud of the officer’s professionalism, persistence and dedication to duty.
"I have no doubt these officers’ actions saved the victim and her unborn child from potential further injury and trauma," Acting Superintendent Craig Garland said.
The 26-year-old male was charged with:
- Assault a female – offender a male
- Engage in conduct that contravenes DVO
He has been bailed to appear in Katherine Local Court in early January.
