Charges over steal from motor vehicle offences in Wollongong

A man has been charged with 10 offences after allegedly breaking into cars, stealing items and assaulting police in Wollongong, NSW Police say.

About 8pm yesterday (Thursday 30 August 2018), a man attended a carpark at a public hospital in Wollongong, where he allegedly broke into two vehicles, and attempted to steal one of them.

The owner of one of the vehicles confronted the man, and was allegedly threatened with a tyre iron.

Police from Wollongong Police District were called and attended the scene.

About 9.10pm the same night, patrolling police arrested a 28-year-old man on New Dapto Road, Wollongong.

Officers searched the man, locating gloves and items allegedly stolen from the vehicles.

He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he allegedly assaulted police whilst in custody.

He was charged with larceny (x2), enter vehicle without consent of owner (x2), destroy or damage property, armed with intent to commit indictable offence, destroy or damage property, possess implements to enter/drive conveyance, and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner and assault police.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 31 August 2018).
