Childcare Regulator Fails Families Again

Liberal Party Victoria

Victorian children continue to be placed at unacceptable risk as the failures of the Allan Labor Government's secretive childcare regulator are further revealed.

New data confirms Labor's existing childcare regulator - the Department of Education-based Quality Assessment and Regulation Division (QARD) - has sanctioned 11 of childcare operator G8 Education's 130 centres since 2016.

Despite these actions, multiple instances of childcare safety failings continue to be reported, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of QARD's enforcement actions.

Despite the clear failings of the childcare watchdog, the Allan Labor Government has explicitly excluded reviewing the 'performance and governance' of QARD from its so-called "rapid review" into child safety in childcare settings.

Shadow Minister for Education, Jess Wilson, said: "Labor's childcare regulator is a watchdog without teeth that isn't up to the job of keeping children safe.

"With more complaints yet fewer enforcement actions, it's clear the QARD isn't the strong and effective regulator Victorian families need and deserve.

"The Allan Labor Government must listen to the repeated calls of the Liberals and Nationals and immediately act to establish an independent statutory authority to strengthen the regulation of childcare services and help restore community confidence in this sector."
