A unique opportunity to access the lucrative Chinese e-commerce market is on offer to local agribusinesses, with expressions of interest open until Friday 8 February 2019.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has developed a program which will combine an intensive business workshop in Sydney with a week-long trade mission to China.

NSW DPI International Engagement development officer, Fay Haynes, said China has the world’s largest e-commerce market, worth an estimated US$1.53 (AU$2.13) trillion in 2018.

"E-commerce in China is still growing and this opportunity to develop and strengthen online marketing skills will give participants the potential to promote their products to a 1.4 billion strong Chinese market," Dr Haynes said.

"Through the program we will help participants better understand Chinese consumers and forge relationships central to entering the market by drawing on high level relationships established by NSW DPI.

"The program is designed to give participants a better understanding of China’s cross-border trade and will deliver critical government and commercial insights, including marketing, logistics, culture and risk."

Participants will have the opportunity to develop relationships with government and market operators and learn from businesses with similar experiences in the market.

Dr Haynes said NSW DPI has developed strong relationships with Chinese e-commerce platforms, including Alibaba, Kaola and Sunning.

"This is our second e-commerce mission to China and each of the three businesses who participated in the pilot has experienced substantial growth through their e-commerce business model," she said.

"We know there is strong demand for Australian premium products in China and believe many regional businesses in New South Wales could take advantage of the opportunities on offer."

The participant-funded program will cost about $8500 per delegate, including travel to China in late March and the Sydney workshop, February 27 to 28.
