Young Queenslanders who want to work in health will have a new website to show them the way.
The Choose Your Own Health Career website highlights the career opportunities available through vocational education and training, from entry level roles to more senior positions.
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the health sector was expected to be one of the biggest contributors to job growth in Queensland over the next five years.
"People of all ages but especially young people, who are searching for a career in healthcare, need the best information they can find about how to commence their education and career journey," Mr Miles said.
"This will be particularly valuable in our regions. Evidence shows people who grew up in the regions, were recruited or trained there are more likely to take up a role in regional Queensland and stay there, were we need them most.
"The Choose Your Own Health Career website does just that and includes 14 clinical and non-clinical career pathways, detailing qualifications, training courses and subsidies available, and potential job outcomes.
"It also includes 25 personal stories of young people who commenced their careers in health via a vocational education and training pathway, as well as six patient journeys to illustrate the number of healthcare and other support roles involved in their care."
Mr Miles said the online resource was a career development tool for students, teachers and parents.
"It provides a snapshot of the different pathways available while in secondary school and when they leave secondary school, particularly when they want an alternative to the tertiary pathway," he said.
The online resource was developed following extensive consultation with clinical and industry stakeholders regarding job and skill shortages and project areas of demand in the future.
"The Choose Your Own Health Career online resource is an example of how we are supporting our youth, investing in our future health workforce, and the value we place on practical and vocational learning," Mr Miles said.
The Choose Your Own Health Career website is supported by a number of other initiatives including incentivised pathways to increase the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the health workforce.
"I look forward to seeing how this resource will support our youth to find meaningful careers in the health sector and make a difference to Queenslanders, through the delivery of safe and effective healthcare services," Mr Miles said.
