Children and young people in out-of-home care across the Northern Territory have been sharing the joy of Christmas over recent weeks, attending festive celebrations with their families, foster and kinship carers, Department of Children and Families (DCF) case managers, and partner organisations.
Christmas parties held across the Territory brought together children in foster and kinship care with organisations including Aboriginal Carer Services, CREATE Foundation, Anglicare NT, Office of the Children's Commissioner NT, CASPA, Life Without Barriers, Kentish Community Services, iCare Youth and Community Services and Foster and Kinship Carers Association NT, creating opportunities for connection, laughter and a sense of belonging.
Santa also made special appearances, spreading cheer and reminding children that they are seen, valued and cared for at this special time of year.
DCF Chief Executive Officer Brent Warren said the celebrations reflect the collective commitment to making sure children in care feel supported, especially during the festive season.
"Christmas can be a challenging time for children and young people who are unable to live with their parents. Seeing them smile, laugh and enjoy time with the people who care about them is incredibly special and reminds us why this work matters," Mr Warren said.
He also acknowledged the dedication of the child protection workforce, who continue to work around the clock to keep children safe.
"While many Territorians enjoy a well-deserved break over Christmas, our child protection teams remain on the frontline 24/7, working with children, families, carers, service providers and partners including Northern Territory Police to ensure children are safe and supported."
Mr Warren also acknowledged the strength and resilience of children and young people in care.
"The courage, effort and resilience shown by children and young people in care is remarkable. It brings everyone great joy to see them feeling happy, safe and celebrated during these Christmas gatherings."
A special thank you was extended to the foster and kinship carers across the Territory who open their hearts and homes to care for children and young people.
"Foster and kinship carers provide stability, love and care during some of the most difficult moments in a child's life. Their generosity makes an extraordinary difference every single day."
