City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM will recognise International Women's Day 2020 with a cocktail evening at the Salisbury Community Hub on Thursday 5 March.

The event will focus on this year's International Women's Day theme – Each for Equal – which encourages both men and women to actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM said it was important that we celebrate the many achievements of strong local women.

"In recent years women have come a long way, and it is important that we celebrate and recognise the achievements of women at both a local and international level," said Mayor Aldridge.

"However there is still a way to go in meeting gender equality and that is why I encourage all of our community to embody the 'each for equal' message, not just on International Women's Day but every day of the year."

It will feature MCs Adelady's Hayley and Lauren and inspirational guest speaker Paralympic track and field star Katrina Webb OAM.

Katrina's athletic journey was turned upside down by a cerebral palsy diagnosis during training at the Australian Institute of Sport, putting her ability to pursue netball at a national level in jeopardy.

However, then eligible for the Paralympic games, her weakness became her greatest strength and she was able to pave out a new athletic journey.

Due to her own experience in living with a disability and a desire to help others, Katrina is a passionate humanitarian who will share her encouraging story.

The event will be held between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday 5 March at the Salisbury Community Hub.
