The Gold Coast's Local Disaster Coordination Centre is being put through its paces in a two-day exercise exploring the City's emergency response to a tsunami.
More than 150 participants from 10 agencies are participating in the exercise, applying their capabilities to solve complex issues in a minor, moderate and major tsunami scenario.
Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said these kinds of exercises were vital to ensure the City was ready to respond to whatever hazard the city might face in the future.
"Whilst the likelihood of a tsunami for the Gold Coast is low, its important the City considers the impacts, and plans for it," Acting Mayor Hammel said.
"Exercises that focus on tsunami also have parallel learnings for storm tide inundation, and as such we are also applying the learnings from TC Alfred within this exercise.
"Our disaster centre may be state of the art, but it is only as good as the people operating in it and it's vital we keep their skills up to date and their preparedness high."
He said the learnings from the exercise would inform the latest version of the Tsunami sub-plan which would be available to the community and include pre-determined evacuation zones.
Gold Coasters are encouraged to sign up for GC Alerts to ensure they remained up to date with the latest information in a disaster. Visit the Disaster and Emergency Dashboard.
