City to trial one hour free parking

Commissioners last night endorsed a motion to initiate a free parking trial in the high street precincts of Claisebrook, East Perth and West Perth.

The decision comes in response to demonstrated evidence of negative movement in commercial vacancy rates in the three areas.

Commissioner Andrew Hammond said the 12 month trial is set to begin immediately on Royal Street in East Perth, and the designation of other areas for the trial will soon follow.

"The one hour free parking trial will provide valuable feedback on the impact of parking on commercial vacancies in key areas of the City of Perth," Commissioner Hammond said.

"The parking trial will be measured against a range of eight outcomes, including foot fall and patronage, a reduction in vacancy rates and increased retail activity.

"This a fresh approach to parking for the City, and one the Commissioners believe will be welcomed by local businesses and the community, as the organisation shifts its focus towards precinct specific parking options."
