The City is putting its disaster response capabilities to the test over the next two days, with more than 150 participants from 10 organisations joining Exercise Provenance in preparation for severe weather season.
Mayor Tom Tate said the annual disaster management exercise is delivered by the City's Disaster and Emergency Management Unit and this year it would simulate a significant flooding event.
"Flooding is one of the most common and disruptive natural hazards our city faces, which is why it's important we regularly test our preparedness and response capabilities," Mayor Tate said.
"Gold Coasters will remember the major floods of 2022 and the widespread impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred last year, but even smaller flooding events can significantly disrupt our way of life.
"We can't control Mother Nature, but we can ensure we're ready to respond and support our community when disaster strikes."
Mayor Tate said the scenario would allow participants to apply lessons identified from recent disasters, test new processes and strengthen coordination across agencies.
"These kinds of exercises are crucial to ensure the Gold Coast continues to improve and evolve our approach to disaster management, remaining ready to respond to and recover from any type of event," Mayor Tate said.
The exercise is taking place on 23 and 24 September at the state-of-the-art Local Disaster Coordination Centre in Ashmore.
"While Exercise Provenance focuses on a major flooding event, the fires at Wongawallen over the weekend further highlight the importance of being prepared and staying informed," Mayor Tom Tate added.
