CFA is advising Victorians to use wood heaters safely during the colder months following a fire that destroyed a rural home in Hinnomunjie, East Gippsland on Tuesday (21 July).
Firefighters were called to a rural property at approximately 6.01am, arriving to find the house fully engulfed in fire.
A passing motorist had spotted flames in the distance while driving to work and, after realising a house was on fire, called Triple Zero (000).
Three fire trucks from Benambra and Omeo brigades responded to the incident.
The fire was brought under control at 6.52am and the scene declared safe at 7.41am. The sole occupant was able to evacuate safely, sadly the house was fully destroyed.
The home did not have working smoke alarms, with the occupant telling crews he believed his dog alerted him to the fire.
CFA District 11 Commander Tony Ford said crews were relieved the occupant had escaped unharmed.
"Everyone is incredibly grateful the occupant was able to get out safely," Tony said.
"He had no opportunity to gather any belongings as he fled, including his phone meaning he couldn't call 000, so the passing motorist's quick actions ensured emergency services were notified."
The fire is not being treated as suspicious and is believed to have started from a wood heater.
Tony said the incident was an important reminder to ensure wood heaters, chimneys and flues were maintained and operated safely.
"Before using a wood heater, make sure it is in good working order and have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected regularly," Tony said.
"Keep furniture, firewood, clothing and other combustible items at least one metre away and never leave a wood heater unattended.
"This includes making sure it is extinguished when you go to bed.
"Working smoke alarms are also essential. They provide early warning and give people valuable time to get outside safely."
Since June 1, CFA responded 131 residential fires statewide, 22 of which were caused by heating systems, chimneys and flues.
Wood heater safety
- Have chimneys and flues cleaned and inspected regularly.
- Keep furniture, clothing and firewood at least one metre from heaters.
- Never leave a wood heater unattended.
- Dispose of ashes in a metal container and ensure they are completely cold.
- Install working smoke alarms in bedrooms, hallways and living areas.
- Test smoke alarms regularly.
