The Finocchiaro CLP Government is backing the Northern Territory's community groups, sporting clubs, and not-for-profit organisations by tonight passing the Gaming Control Amendment Bill 2025.
These changes allow eligible groups based in government-owned buildings to apply for capital works grants through the Community Benefit Fund (CBF) once again.
Minister for Racing Marie-Clare Boothby said this was a small amendment with a big impact which delivered real results for Territorians.
"We are empowering not-for-profits, strengthening our communities, and ensuring government support is delivered effectively and with fiscal responsibility," said Ms Boothby.
"Many community organisations have been unable to access this important support, and I've heard their concerns loud and clear - that's why we're taking action to fix the issue.
"During our year of action, certainty and security, we are delivering improvements that change lives and restore our unique Territory lifestyle .
"These groups don't need red tape or hassle. We have backed them in so they can continue to improve their facilities and boost delivery to the community.
Back in 2021, an issue was identified under the Australian accounting standards - but rather than find a solution, Labor swept the issue under the rug and issued a directive that prohibited these organisations from accessing the CBF depriving support to worthy groups.
In the last year alone, more than $16 million has been delivered in CBF Grants to support sport, culture and community groups across the NT.
The CBF is funded through a levy on gaming machines in pubs, taverns and casinos across the Territory and is reinvested into the community each year through grants that support events, leisure activities, not-for-profit services, vehicles, gambling harm reduction and research.
"We're ensuring the places where people come together to play sport, access services, and connect with their community can access the support they need to upgrade their facilities, because we know how important these places are to Territorians," said Ms Boothby.
