CLP Unveils Darwin's First MXGP Track

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government has officially delivered the Northern Territory's first international-standard Motorcross Grand Prix of Australia (MXGP) track, marking a historic achievement as Darwin prepares to debut on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar.

After foundational work by local company Sitzler, Australia's leading motocross builders Protraxx designed and constructed the epic 1.6km track. It features 22 corners, 21 jumps, a 90-metre start straight, rolling waves, a triple step-up, and 30-metre (100-foot) jumps.

In the final stage alone, 46,000 cubic metres of soil were moved in 25 days - equivalent to more than 1,930 truckloads.

Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby, who toured the track at Hidden Valley Raceway this week, said its completion was a significant milestone ahead of next month's event.

"With just under three weeks until the gates open, excitement is building among motorsport fans locally, nationally, and internationally," Ms Boothby said.

"The completion of this track is exactly what a year of action, certainty and security looks like. We're getting things done, creating new opportunities, and delivering on our commitment to rebuild the economy and restore our unique Territory lifestyle."

"This follows another huge weekend of motorsport in the Territory, with Nitro Up North bringing two nights of nitro-fuelled drag racing action to Hidden Valley with more than 6000 attendances."

This marks the first time in 24 years the FIM Motocross World Championship returns to Australian soil, with the event expected to inject $20.9 million into the Territory economy each year until 2029.

"With 32,000 attendances expected across the three days - travelling from every state and territory across Australia, as well as international visitors from the USA, UK, and New Zealand, now's the time to grab your tickets and be part of the excitement," said Ms Boothby.

"We're showcasing the Top End as a top-tier destination for sporting events, set to be broadcast to an audience of 700 million across 100 countries and attracting riders, teams and spectators from around the world."

Protraxx Director Josh Proctor said: "We are proud to deliver a purpose-built track in Darwin that meets international standards for the return of MXGP to Australia.

"It has been a significant effort from our team, and everyone involved in the lead-up to this build, and the result is a world-class circuit designed to challenge the best riders in the world and provide fans with an unforgettable racing experience."

Motorcycling Australia Chief Executive Officer Peter Doyle said: "The build-up to the MXGP of Australia has already been huge, but now the anticipation has gone to another level with the official unveiling of this magnificent grand prix layout.

"It's no shrinking violet either: it's been engineered to provide the ultimate challenge for all riders, from the MXGP elite to the juniors who will be competing in the MA Motocross State Challenge."

The event is being delivered by the Northern Territory Major Events Company in partnership with MXGP rights-holder Infront Moto Racing and Motorcycling Australia, running from 19-21 September, 2025.
