Coalition Hops Off Labor's E-bike Ban

Liberal Party Victoria

Labor's plan to ban lithium powered e-bikes and e-scooters from trains and trams will be opposed and reversed by the Liberals and Nationals.

The ban is typical of the Allan Labor Government. Whatever it can't tax, it will ban.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Matthew Guy, said it made no sense for Labor to encourage people to get on e-bikes and e-scooters, but then outlaw their carriage on public transport.

"E-bikes and e-scooters are now an important part of sustainable alternative transport. Banning their carriage on trains and trams and limiting their broader use is a gross over-reaction to a very small number of incidents involving this mode of transport, across international rail networks.

''Given the mobility and flexibility e-bikes and e-scooters provide to a growing number of Victorians, the government should be encouraging their use in a properly regulated and sustainable active transport market, not limiting their use to short distances from people's homes."

"Mobility-limited Victorians rely on these forms of transport to get around, so it is completely unfair to limit people who rely on these forms of mobility as a key part of their social interaction."

Mr Guy said that a Liberal and Nationals Government would do all it can to encourage Victorians to use new modes of transport, such as well-regulated e-bikes and e-scooters.

"The Liberals and Nationals believe in choice; the choice to get around, the choice of transport and the choice to ride the bike you have legally purchased without the government over-reacting and banning you from public transport."

"The Liberals and Nationals are committed to working with industry and safety experts to ensure a sensible, well-regulated framework for the use and carriage of e-bikes and e-scooters."
