The Cobram community is set to benefit from a share of $1,697,450 funding allocated to the Murray Electorate under Round 3 of the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government’s Building Better Regions Fund. The Cobram Community Cinema has been granted $526,650, to be matched by funds contributed by the local community, after the Melba Theatre burned down in 2010.
The new cinema will be located in a redeveloped Cobram Masonic Lodge on Main Street, and will be a twin cinema facility (one seats 65, one seats 94). The cinema will also have an open area that will double as a function / meeting room, and is expected to employ one young manager, two youth trainees and up to eight youth volunteers.
Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum MP recognised the contribution of the region’s youth in spearheading this project, and expects that the now-funded project will help create employment and social opportunities, drive economic growth, and build a stronger regional community in Cobram.
Mr Drum stated “Most Australian’s take for granted the ability to go to the cinema in their leisure time, and I’m delighted that those in the Cobram region will now be able to enjoy this ability too. It is projects such as this that make our regional communities even better places to live, work and raise a family and I’m excited to see the positive difference this project will make to the Cobram community.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Liberal and Nationals Government is committed to ensuring Australia’s regions remain strong, resilient and prosperous in the long term.
“We have seen fantastic outcomes from the first two rounds, and today’s announcement continues our commitment to unlocking the economic potential of regional Australia and ensuring our regions continue to thrive” MrMcCormack said.
