It is my pleasure to launch the Cocos CV which showcases the unique capacity and capability of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) to attract investment and support employment in Australia's remote coral atolls.
Officially releasing the initiative at today's community reception on Home Island, I applaud the Shire and business sector for their collaboration on this innovative product to support and grow the local economy.
The Cocos CV encourages external companies to use local labour and services for major projects in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT), providing a detailed matrix of expertise available on island, and plant and equipment to hire. Produced by the Shire, with the support of the Indian Ocean Territories Regional Development Organisation (IOTRDO) and funding from the Australian Government under the Building Better Regions Fund, it sets out the trades and industries represented in the small but skilled CKI workforce.
It outlines the benefits of using the local workforce - including the local environment, history and culture - to ensure a good understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges of operating in the region.
The Cocos CV also aims to provide local businesses, organisations and job seekers the best opportunity to secure employment. Coming from a small community, I understand just how important this is. I am committed to keeping local jobs local.
CKI has more than 36 local businesses providing services such as building and trades, shipping logistics and supply chain management, hospitality and catering, telecommunications, communication and translation, residential and commercial property maintenance. Community members are ready for work with qualifications in a broad range of competencies including conservation and land management, construction and heavy machinery operation.
Together with the Administrator of the Cocos Keeling Islands, Mrs Natasha Griggs, I am confident the Cocos CV will contribute to the sustainable and culturally appropriate development of the region.
The Australian Government recognises that job creation and building local business capacity is a high priority for the CKI community as outlined in the Our Cocos (Keeling) Islands 2030 Strategic Plan.
