Cold case charge over 1981 rape, NSW

A man is due to appear in court today charged over the alleged rape of a woman at Mascot almost 40 years ago, NSW Police say.

Police allege the then-22-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint in a vehicle on Qantas Drive, Mascot, on Saturday 25 April 1981.

A man – then aged 26 – was arrested by detectives and charged over the incident.

He was committed for trial; however, he was granted bail then failed to attend court in 1984, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

After new information was provided to police, detectives from Botany Bay Police Area Command worked with Victorian detectives at Shepparton to arrest a 62-year-old man yesterday (Thursday 5 April 2018).

NSWPF successfully applied for the man’s extradition when he appeared in Shepparton Local Court, and the man was returned to NSW last night.

He has now been charged with the outstanding warrant for the offence of rape.

He was refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court today (Friday 6 April 2018).
