Commissioner's Awards for Excellence

Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Commissioner Peter Martin APM has congratulated QCS officers at his annual awards for excellence.

As a top-tier public safety agency, Commissioner Martin established the Commissioner's Awards for Excellence in 2018 to celebrate outstanding service from QCS staff in the across five categories: Customer Focus, Innovation, Performance, Sustainability and Leadership.

A number of strong contenders were nominated this year, highlighting the diversity and innovation that is within the organisation.

"I want to thank all of our hard working officers for their work and dedication to keeping Queenslanders safe and assisting those in our care to rehabilitate and reduce their chances of reoffending,' Commissioner Martin said.

"Today's awards highlight some of the many amazing things that are being done by QCS employees across the state, and I congratulate all of today's recipients for their work.'

"I also acknowledge all the nominees of the awards for their dedication to Queensland. Some of the innovative programs and services that the QCS are involved in are changing the lives of the prisoners and offenders right across the state, and on behalf of the QCS, I want to thank them for their service and for helping to keep us all safe."

Commissioner's Awards for Excellence winners

Winners in the individual categories:

  • Customer Focus – Peter Coyne for excellence in developing innovative solutions to meet the increasing need of the Escort and Security Branch
  • Innovation – Lynne McNairn for excellence in innovation through the introduction of the prisoner voicemail trial
  • Performance – Yi Chen for excellence and sustained high performance in the delivery of legal services
  • Sustainability - Russell Stanford for excellence in environmental sustainability through support for the cultivation of native bees
  • Leadership - Ashley House for excellence in professional conduct and high standards as a front line operational leader

Winners in the team categories:

  • Customer Focus - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First-Aid Training for the delivery of a culturally responsive approach to support the mental health and wellbeing of first nations people in the correctional system in Queensland
  • Customer Focus - Media and Communications for efforts to deliver customer service, innovation and response capability for the 24/7 media demands of a top-tier public service agency
  • Innovation - QCS Contracts Management Unit for their State-wide Prisoner Menu Program delivering centralised prisoner menu purchasing and significant savings for food procurement
  • Performance - Flood Recovery Response Team for performance and support to Townsville residents in flood recovery efforts
  • Sustainability - Brisbane North Community Service Team for continued efforts to improve environmental sustainability, repurposing and upcycling garments, toys and bags with the Chermside Creators
  • Leadership - Operation Elevate for shared commitment to better outcomes for female prisoners
