Commissioner Tzitzikostas on Middle East Developments

European Commission
Developments in the Middle East continue to have serious implications for transport safety and security. Our priority is the safety of passengers, seafarers, and crews. I am in direct contact with Member States, our allies in the region and relevant partners to ensure that EU citizens affected in the area can rely on our full support.
The Conflict Zone Information Bulletin issued on 28 February remains in force. Airspace across parts of the Middle East and the Gulf region remains fully or partially closed. Since 28 February, we have 1000 flights cancelled per day. I am engaging with IATA, airlines and industry partners to discuss capacities for organising repatriation flights.
The maritime situation in the Persian Gulf, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, remains serious, with over 3,100 vessels, including 463 EU-flagged and EU-interest ships, affected in the area. I am working with IMO and our international partners and industry to try to support safe passage, mitigate risks, and monitor potential impacts on global supply chains.
Our key focus remains ensuring that EU citizens can return home safely, while upholding their passenger rights and providing clear guidance and support.
