More than 160 Georges River residents enjoyed a weekend of paddling fun at Carss Point Baths on 21-22 March.
The free sessions were thanks to a partnership between Georges River Council and Paddle Australia, the national body for paddle sports.
Participants tried out kayaks, canoes and stand‑up paddle boards in a safe and supported environment. Each 45‑minute session included a safety briefing, life jackets, guided paddle play, a chance to swap watercraft and ball games. All activities were led by qualified instructors with first aid training.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "these events were a great chance for our community to enjoy the Georges River differently. They also show the Council's commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles."
"Our waterways shape our community identity. We're proud to work with Paddle Australia as this partnership helps residents stay active and enjoy outdoor activities safely," said Mayor Borg.
Richard Fox, Executive General Manager – Engagement and Partnerships at Paddle Australia, was the head facilitator across the weekend. Joining him to lead the sessions were paddle athletes Ally Cork, Declan Ellis and Mark Crosbee.
He said it was inspiring to see the community embrace paddling at Carss Point Baths.
"It's been wonderful to be here in the Georges River area and see so many happy faces on the water, with people enjoying paddling for the very first time in such an ideal location at Carss Point Baths," he said.
"We were delighted with the response from the community — the sessions were oversubscribed — which shows just how much appetite there is for getting out on the water."
"And we would like thank Georges River Council for their collaboration in bringing this opportunity to the community. In the longer term, we hope activations like this can help bring more people in touch with water and create permanent paddling opportunities for local residents."
Georges River Council is the first metropolitan council to team up with Paddle Australia for a community event series.
