Design plans have now been released for public comment as part of the Willoughby Bike Plan 2012, thanks to $3.4 million in funding from the NSW Government.
The first is the Pacific Highway Shared Path between Mowbray Road, Chatswood and Herbert Street, St Leonards Bicycle Route Improvement – a 3.3km shared pedestrian and bicycle path along the Pacific Highway between Mowbray Road, Chatswood and St Leonards Train Station.
The second is the Chatswood CBD to St Leonards CBD Bicycle Route – a 2.5 km cycleway from Mowbray Road, Chatswood, running through Hampden Road, Brand Street, and Herbert Street to the Pacific Highway, St Leonards. This route will be a combination of connected bike lanes and off-road shared paths.
The detailed design plans were developed following extensive community consultation of concept plans in 2019 and 2020.
“The NSW Government has stepped in to help our active transport residents realise a long term goal to link our local communities,” said Mayor Gail-Giles Gidney.
“Creating safe, direct and accessible cycle ways is an exciting development for our Council and the way of the future.”
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the NSW Government’s funding commitment to the new cycleways and shared paths is part of the $100 million Precinct Support Scheme.
“Public spaces, cycleways and shared paths are just as important to the community as roads and shops, and these new facilities will provide local residents, workers and visitors with better access to active transport,” Mr Stokes said.
“We are ensuring communities across Greater Sydney reap the benefits and enjoy new and improved open space and infrastructure as their communities grow.”
As part of this funding allocation, Council is also progressing on the construction of the Pacific Highway to Herbert Street Artarmon Bicycle Route Improvement – shared paths along Campbell Street, Reserve Road and Frederick Street.
Local residents have been invited by Council to comment on the detailed designs of the new routes. Public comments can be made at haveyoursaywilloughby.com.au
