The Hills Shire Council has secured a further $6.6 million from the NSW Government's WestInvest program to help build beneficial community infrastructure that will support residents and give a boost to local businesses.
The recent announcement is in addition to the $15.5 million that Council has received under the $5 billion dollar program to build a new indoor recreation centre at the former Horseworld site in Box Hill, as well as funding towards upgrading flood warning systems in the Shire.
The new projects that have secured funding in the Community Competitive Round, included:
- Castle Hill Showground pedestrian bridge - $4.6 million;
- Baker Crescent shops in Baulkham Hills, including design and rejuvenation of street and shop frontage, including McBurney Reserve - $999,595; and
- Livvi's Playground extension at Bernie Mullane Sports Complex, including an amenities building and new playground equipment - $1.09 million.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi said the latest round of funding would help Council to accelerate projects that he believes are beneficial for the health and wellbeing of residents, and promotes vibrancy and inclusivity.
"Council securing this funding for local projects is wonderful news for residents," Mayor Gangemi said.
"The planned pedestrian bridge will improve access from the Castle Hill Showground into Fred Caterson Reserve and enhance safety for both pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. This is particularly important with more residents moving into the State Government's Showground Precinct and using the sporting facilities within the Reserve.
"Livvi's Place is a much-loved all abilities playground. This funding will allow Council to complete stage two of our planned upgrade, which includes additional playground equipment, such as a flying fox with an accessible harness seat, more picnic facilities and seating, as well as a water refill station and a new amenities block which will cater to families utilising the playground.
"This funding will also help Council to enhance the street frontage of Baker Crescent, which is home to a number of local shops and businesses, and located next door to the popular McBurney Reserve, in Baulkham Hills. The park is enjoyed by many residents who usually visit the Baker Crescent shops for food and coffee, before visiting the park to use the playground or enjoy a picnic with family and friends. Enhancing this facility will make this area even more attractive and user-friendly for residents and businesses.

It will also be a boost to local businesses and create even more jobs, which is essential to keeping our economy moving," Mayor Gangemi added.
WestInvest is $5 billion program, which aims to deliver transformational projects and local infrastructure to communities across Greater Sydney.
