Community Pushes for Improved Route 606 Bus Service

City of Port Phillip
Council welcomed a community-led petition received in October which strongly supported advocacy for more frequent and reliable Route 606 bus services.

In August, Council endorsed its 2025 Advocacy Priorities where improved transport connections to and within Fishermans Bend identified as a focus area.

Council was pleased to receive a community-led petition in October that strongly aligned with its position calling for increased frequency and reliability of the Route 606 bus service. The petition, signed by 737 community members, was formally presented at the Council Meeting on 15 October.

At the meeting, Councillors unanimously resolved to:

  1. Receive and note the petition regarding service frequency and reliability concerns on Route 606.
  2. Acknowledge and thank the petitioners for their submission and continued advocacy.
  3. Request officers to incorporate advocacy for increased service frequency on Route 606 as a distinct component of Council's broader Fishermans Bend transport campaign.
  4. Include advocacy for Route 606 in Council's formal response to the Victorian Government's Fishermans Bend Integrated Transport Plan.
  5. Request the Mayor to write to the Member for Albert Park and the Minister for Public and Active Transport in support of the petition, advocating for more frequent and extended services on Route 606.

On the night, Councillors noted:

"This is a service that connects not only major activity centres, but schools, other recreational and employment opportunities across this route" - Cr Makin
"The 606 is a fantastic bus. It connects many, many assets in our area, but it doesn't show up" - Cr Cunsolo

Since the meeting, Council has worked closely with the lead petitioner, the Fishermans Bend Business Forum, and local residents' groups to prepare a letter to Minister for Public and Active Transport the Hon. Gabrielle Williams MP, and Nina Taylor MP, Member for Albert Park. The letter reinforces the community's call for improved service frequency on Route 606 to better connect Fishermans Bend with surrounding neighbourhoods.

A copy of the letter is available here.

Council extends its sincere thanks to the lead petitioner and all community members who supported this important initiative. Your voices are helping shape a more connected and accessible Fishermans Bend.
