Wollongong City Council Rangers will implement a community safety program to discourage illegal camping and dangerous parking and make our beaches and reserves safe for all during the Australia Day long weekend.
While shade structures or tents are allowed during the day, they must be down by 8pm. Drivers are asked to follow the road rules and the signage when it comes to parking their vehicles. Drivers should not park on grass reserves, median strips or in other prohibited and unsafe locations.
"Wollongong's beaches and foreshore reserves are a busy destination for locals and tourists especially during summer," said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.
"However, our reserves and parks are for everyone to enjoy with their families and friends and there is no excuse for camping illegally or for parking dangerously or inappropriately."
Camping and staying overnight at parks or reserves is prohibited and Council Rangers will work to ensure visitors are aware of these restrictions. Penalties apply for dangerous & illegal parking practices and camping and staying overnight in prohibited locations is not on. This is to limit damage to our reserves and parks.
"Just like Christmas and New Year's Eve, our Rangers are asking that all community members do the right thing and respect the camping and parking rules," said Cr Bradbery.
"So park safely and sensibly and make sure any tents and shade structures are down by 8pm. If you're thinking of camping, make sure you reserve a spot in one of our local camping grounds. By working together we can all enjoy our beaches and reserves."
