Community Safety Month In Stonnington

October is Community Safety Month and there is a great line-up of events for everyone to get involved with – from business webinars and cyber safety lessons to a chance to meet your local police officers.

To celebrate the reopening of the Greville Street Library we're hosting a Community Day on Saturday 11 October. Pop in to see the Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers booth. Whether you're after free license plate screws, tips on preventing theft or just to meet your local officers they'll be there with our Council safety team for a friendly chat.

Join the local Vic Pol team for a relaxed coffee catch up. It's a great chance to meet some of your local police officers, share any concerns, get safety tips and make community connections. They'll be at Malvern Central on Tuesday 7 October and Pran Central on Wednesday 29 October.

This October, the City of Stonnington is inviting local businesses to take part in a free Lunch and Learn webinar series. From championing mental health and managing conflict, to addressing homelessness and cyber security, these one-hour sessions (12–1pm) bring together expert speakers and practical advice to help business owners and employees build safer, more resilient workplaces and communities.

Stay safe online

Staying safe online is more important than ever, especially as scams get increasingly sophisticated. As part of Cyber Safe Stonnington, we're holding a couple of events during Community Safety Month aimed at parents wanting to keep kids safe online, seniors and business owners.

In other safety news…

October is a great opportunity to draw awareness to community safety…but we're also working on ongoing initiatives in the background to ensure Stonnington is as safe as can be. The overwhelming response to our Community Safety Map tool showed particular concern around the Chapel Street precinct and this is being addressed as part of the Chapel Street Precinct Improvement Plan.

Our local laws officers have recently increased their patrols in the Chapel Street Precinct in response to community concerns about safety. With six officers on rotation, our friendly team will now be out and about in pairs doing patrols across the week at different times to maintain broad coverage. Victoria Police are also joining the team when they can in a joint patrol initiative. By taking a proactive and coordinated approach, we can respond faster and intervene more effectively to reduce antisocial behaviour and make the area feel safer for everyone.

As a key element of our holistic approach to uplift the precinct – increasing cleaning and maintenance efforts has been a top priority since day one. Here's what we've been busy with:

  • Weekly precinct wide pressure washing, as well as daily pressure cleaning of hot spot locations and impacted sites
  • Extra hands on deck with a new roaming cleaning officer assigned to Chapel Street
  • A declutter audit and removal of a range of old signs and infrastructure
  • Better trader support, with a single point of contact for urgent cleaning needs
  • An audit of Council owned assets including seating, bin cages, pedestrian railings, bike hoops and tree surrounds. Replacement and replenishment works will be delivered over the coming months.
