Competition Bureau to review Tribunal ruling in case against Vancouver Airport Authority

From: Competition Bureau Canada

October 17, 2019 - OTTAWA, ON - Competition Bureau

Today, the Competition Tribunal issued a decision dismissing the Commissioner of Competition's application against the Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA).

In September 2016, the Bureau filed its application with the Tribunal seeking to prohibit VAA from imposing restrictions that decrease competition among in-flight catering companies at Vancouver International Airport.

The Bureau's application sought an order against VAA requiring it to grant airport access to new entrant in-flight catering firms to serve airline customers, subject to certain customary requirements.

Although the Tribunal's reasons are confidential at this time, a public version will be released at a later date. The Bureau is carefully reviewing today's decision to determine its next steps.

Quick facts

  • A summary of the decision is available on the Tribunal website.

  • VAA is responsible for the management and operation of Vancouver International Airport, which includes granting physical access to the airport.

  • Vancouver International Airport is Canada's second busiest airport with about 25.9 million passengers in 2018.

  • In-flight catering involves preparing meals for passengers and crew on commercial aircraft plus related galley handling services, such as the transportation of products and equipment to aircraft, warehousing and inventory management.
