Congratulations to HSC First in Course recipients

The Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW) today congratulated all recipients of the 2018 HSC First in Course Awards who were acknowledged today by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) at a ceremony at the University of New South Wales.

"Every student completing their HSC deserves congratulations for their effort and their families, friends and teachers are right to be proud of their achievement. For those who have topped the state in a subject, today is the culmination of many months of focus and hard work and they've earned the right to celebrate", said Dr Geoff Newcombe AM, Chief Executive of AISNSW.

"The overall performance of students attending Independent schools was outstanding this year and is testament to the high quality of teaching and learning that continues to be delivered."

Of the 132 First in Course awards this year, 54 were awarded to students from Independent schools, continuing a consistent trend of the sector providing a higher proportion of First in Course recipients (41 per cent) than its proportion of HSC candidates (24 per cent).

Students from 35 independent schools were acknowledged in this year's First in Course awards, including several from regional NSW and a significant proportion of students attending schools that serve low socio-economic communities.

Particularly notable was the performance of students from Sydney Grammar School which had ten individual students awarded First in Course across eleven subjects, and Pymble Ladies' College with four students who each topped a subject.

Dr Newcombe said: "These results give parents confidence that by choosing an Independent school for their child they are giving them a great opportunity to achieve their potential."
