Construction Begins On LGH Multistorey Carpark

Tasmanian Government

Construction is underway on a major new multistorey carpark at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH), which will deliver hundreds of new parking spaces for patients, visitors and staff.

The seven-storey carpark is being built by VOS Construction and will provide 474 parking spaces, including 10 accessible spaces located on the lower levels.

The facility will also include parking for motorcycles and secure bicycle parking, plus a dual head electric vehicle fast charging station.

Early works began in mid-January to prepare the site ahead of main construction.

Over recent weeks, works have included the creation of two-way traffic flow on Cleveland Street and access changes to the hospital's Queen Victoria entrance ahead of the Howick Street carpark closing for construction.

The main construction site on the corner of Charles and Howick Street has now been established.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the new multistorey carpark will make it easier to access the LGH.

"We understand the importance of hospital parking facilities, including for patients coming to their appointments, visitors, and of course our hard-working staff," Minister Archer said.

"Our Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmania by investing in a new multistorey carpark at the LGH to increase the availability of parking across the hospital precinct."

The temporary Howick Street carpark has opened at the corner of Howick and Mulgrave Streets and provides alternative parking while the multistorey carpark is being built.

A regular, free shuttle service is operating between the temporary Howick Street Carpark and the front entrance of the Launceston General Hospital between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Construction of the new carpark will be delivered in two stages to provide early access to parking on the lower levels in mid-2027. The final remaining works will be completed by the end of 2027.
