Construction industry faces strong headwinds

Tasmanian Labor

Storm clouds continue to gather around Tasmania's construction industry, meanwhile we have a reactive Liberal Government failing to take serious economic headwinds seriously.

Master Builders have projected a prolonged slump in new housing starts. The Building and Construction Industry Forecast calculates that the number of new housing starts will remain below 2019 levels through 2026.

Master Builders Tasmania also state that non-residential construction is already in the middle of a downturn which they expect to continue until 2024. The industry is already $130m lower this year than in 2019.

In the midst of a housing crisis, as well as the importance of the industry to the economy, this will have huge implications for Tasmania.

This is yet another example of the Rockliff Government's refusal to take seriously the economic headwinds facing Tasmania, which is especially alarming given Tasmania is in the middle of an unprecedented housing crisis.
