Consultation Opens for Tasmanian Youth Justice Facility

Tasmanian Government

Consultation is now open on a new model of care aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people in the custodial youth justice system, while supporting community safety.

Work is underway to shape the Youth Justice Facility Model of Care, which will guide how youth justice services are delivered for children and young people in detention at the new youth justice facility, from first arrival at the facility through to returning to their community.

It aligns with a number of Commission of Inquiry recommendations and the Youth Justice System Model of Care that was released in 2024.

Minister for Children and Youth, Jo Palmer, said the Tasmanian Government was committed to developing a new youth justice facility that provides a safe and supportive environment and helps young people heal and prepare for life after detention.

"This draft model has been shaped by our children and young people, people with lived experience, and youth justice experts from across Australia and internationally," Minister Palmer said.

The draft model is now available online and open to the community to provide feedback.

Feedback will inform the final Model of Care for the new youth justice facility.
