The NMI R 117:2026 Dynamic measuring systems for liquids other than water standard adopts and modifies OIML R 117 (2019). It aligns Australia's pattern approval requirements for flow metering systems with current international standards.
You can access the standard in 3 parts on NMI's pattern approval requirements page.
- Part 1: Metrological and technical requirements
- Part 2: Metrological controls and performance tests
- Part 3: Test report format.
This updated edition received strong industry support during a public consultation we held from 20 June to 15 August 2025.
Consultation responses showed unanimous support for adopting the updated requirements. In response to feedback, NMI:
- made minor changes to the draft wording
- aligned maximum permissible errors with the National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009.
Stakeholders raised concerns about electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing capability in Australia. Although businesses may need to use accredited international laboratories, aligning Australian requirements with international standards:
- allows businesses to rely on testing from trusted overseas laboratories
- streamlines approval processes
- reduces technical barriers to trade.
