A panel of experts will advise the Morrison Government on how to implement performance-based funding to improve university student outcomes.
The panel, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong Professor Paul Wellings, will consult with the sector on the best way to introduce the reforms from 2020.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said the reforms would help ensure the Morrison Government’s $17 billion per year investment in higher education and research delivers results.
"The Morrison Government is providing record funding to universities," Mr Tehan said.
"In 2020, funding for bachelor-level places will grow in line with population growth in the 18-64 year-old age bracket, contingent on universities meeting specific performance requirements.
"This will ensure universities pay more attention to providing a better student experience and introduce new initiatives to improve the quality of their teaching, support student retention and boost graduate employment outcomes.
"In particular, the Government wants to see policies that will lift the attainment rate of students from regional, rural, remote, Indigenous and low socioeconomic status backgrounds."
The panel will provide the Morrison Government with an interim report by the end of March 2019 and a final report by 30 June 2019.
