Surf Coast and Golden Plains Shire Councils have awarded a contract for repairs to the Pollocksford Road bridge, marking an important milestone towards restoring and re-opening the historic structure.
The contract covers the design and construction of a new bridge deck while protecting the bridge's heritage listed features, including the original bluestone piers and abutments.
A routine assessment of the bridge in March 2024 found its condition had deteriorated faster than expected, affecting its structural integrity.
To keep the bridge open while maintaining public safety, Council introduced a three-tonne load limit and speed reduction.
However, continued use by heavy vehicles placed the structure at risk, and the bridge was subsequently closed to all through traffic.
The bridge is in Gnarwarre on the boundary between Surf Coast Shire and Golden Plains Shire, and the repairs are jointly funded. Surf Coast Shire Council will be managing the works.
The awarded contract amount is $2,092,601.00 (Ex. GST), with each Council contributing 50% of the project costs as it is a joint asset.
The bridge is protected by a heritage overlay due to its historical significance as one of the earliest bridges constructed over the Barwon River.
The four original bluestone piers and capped bluestone abutments are the key heritage elements. The bridge deck surface and guardrails are not considered to be of heritage significance.
