Cooee man charged with firearm and explosives charges

As a result of the two-day search at Cooee, police have charged a 74-year-old Cooee man with multiple charges including Possessing Prohibited Firearms, Possessing Unregistered Firearms, Failing to Comply with Firearm and Ammunition Storage Requirements, Possessing a Crossbow and Possessing an Explosive.

The man will appear in the Burnie Magistrates Court today.

Burnie CIB will continue to investigate the matter and there is a high likelihood of further charges relating to this search.

Detective Acting Inspector Tony Stewart again thanked Cooee residents for their cooperation during the controlled detonation of the explosives, and the search.

"Any illicit firearm is a concern to Tasmania Police, and we will investigate all information relating to these types of weapons," he said.

"Firearms in the wrong hands are dangerous and we thank the community for their support," he said.

"Police will take any opportunity to take illegal firearms off the street either through these types of searches or through the permanent firearms amnesty
