An unauthorised game of hide and seek led Police to the bedroom of an alleged fleeing driver in Clover Park last night.
Just gone 10.20pm, a patrol unit in Counties Manukau signalled for a Toyota Hilux to stop on Kerrs Road, Manurewa.
Inspector Mark Chivers, Counties Manukau Central Area Prevention Manager, says the driver initially followed instructions and pulled over.
"As an officer exited the patrol car to speak with the occupant, the driver allegedly accelerated away at speed.
"The vehicle was observed driving through a red light and then travelling at excessive speed along Great South Road."
Due to the dangerous manner of driving, the vehicle was not pursued.
With the driver now out of sight, the Police Eagle helicopter was dispatched to try and locate the vehicle.
From its eyes in the sky, Eagle's officers spotted the Hilux parked on Hilltop Road.
A Police dog unit helped narrow in on a precise location and tracked a scent from the vehicle to an address on the street.
The suspected driver was found hiding inside a bedroom and was arrested.
"Police have no tolerance for drivers who put themselves and other road users at risk with their dangerous decisions.
"We continue to remind these drivers that they will be held accountable for their actions," Inspector Chivers says.
A 25-year-old male will appear in Manukau District Court today, charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain stopped for an enforcement officer.
