If you'd like to see more shade or tree canopy in your street, Mildura Rural City Council's Cool It Street Program is offering a chance for residents to have semi-mature trees planted in their street free-of-charge.

Nominations are now open for the program, which aims to provide cooler street environments, improved streetscape amenity and enhanced urban biodiversity among a host of benefits.

Resident can nominate their street, or a section of their street, by completing a simple online form at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Cool-It

Councillor Jodi Reynolds said eligibility conditions included streets at least five years old with little to no trees in nature strips, and support from multiple residents.

"This is a great initiative that will provide increased amenity and shade, but also help beautify some of our residential streets," Cr Reynolds said.

"It will also increase awareness and knowledge within these streets about the importance of urban greening in our community, which is particularly relevant in our region given our often searingly hot summers."

Residents who successfully nominate for the program will have a chance to provide input into the species of tree that will be planted in their street.

Cr Reynolds said that as part of the Cool It initiative, Council was also giving away 100 semi-mature Australian native trees to help the community increase shade and amenity on their properties and in their streets.

To register for a tree, visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Cool-It. This offer will remain open until all 100 trees are taken up.
