Another dangerous Mornington Peninsula intersection has been fixed - with the Albanese and Allan Labor Governments delivering a safer road for local families.
The Coolart Road and Myers Road intersection in Bittern is now complete.
The old four-way intersection had a history of crashes.
Between July 2015 and July 2020, there were five casualty crashes - including a fatal crash involving two people.
All occurred in clear, dry conditions. Now, a new roundabout replaces the outdated layout.
The upgrade also includes new guardrails to reduce the severity of crashes, raised safety platforms and improved lighting to boost visibility.
Around 5,900 vehicles travel through the intersection each day.
This $10.6 million project was jointly funded by the Albanese and Allan Governments, with each contributing $5.3 million under the Road Safety Program.
The new roundabout follows similar safety upgrades delivered by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council at nearby intersections along Coolart Road - creating a safer, more consistent corridor for drivers.
Together, these upgrades tackle the real causes of serious crashes: high-speed cross traffic, poor visibility and conflict points.
As stated by Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain MP
"This was a dangerous intersection with a tragic history - and we've fixed it.
"By partnering with the Victorian Government, we're delivering safer roads that protect local families, freight operators and visitors right across the Mornington Peninsula."
As stated by Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne MP
"Five casualty crashes, including a fatal collision, is five too many - that's why we got on with making this intersection safer."
"Roundabouts save lives. They slow traffic, cut the risk of serious crashes and mean families can get where they're going safely."
As stated by Federal Senator for Victoria Jess Walsh
"Whether you're on a vacation, or picking up the kids from school, the completion of these major upgrades will mean less time in the car and a safer journey.
"This investment will make a major difference for pedestrians and road users, making Bittern's local roads safer and moving traffic more efficiently."
As stated by Victorian Member for Hastings Paul Mercurio
"Locals know this intersection - and they know how badly it needed fixing."
"This upgrade means parents, tradies and freight drivers can move through Bittern more safely and more smoothly every single day."
