Friday 9 January is a day of Catastrophic Fire Danger for south-west Victoria, including Corangamite Shire.
Catastrophic Fire Danger days are the most dangerous conditions for a fire. Fire will be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving. If a fire starts and takes hold, lives are likely to be lost. Homes cannot withstand fires in these conditions. People's lives may depend on the decisions they make, even before there is a fire. Residents and visitors should activate their bushfire plans now and stay away from areas of high bushfire risk. Leaving early is always the safest option.
Tomorrow is also a day of Total Fire Ban. No fire can be lit in the open air or allowed to remain alight.
Corangamite Shire Council services and facilities will be impacted by the declaration of Catastrophic Fire Danger.
The following Council facilities will be closed:
- Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre
- Timboon and Derrinallum Transfer Stations
- Naroghid Transfer Station – closed to the public, commercial customers only
- Family daycare and childcare services
- Council swimming pools: Camperdown, Cobden, Lismore, Skipton, Terang, Timboon
- Libraries: Camperdown, Cobden, Derrinallum, Terang and Timboon, and Skipton Library book exchange
- Camperdown Stadium and Timboon Stadium, including gym access
- Community halls
- Walking Trails, including Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf Reserve, Mount Noorat, and Poorpa Yanyeen Meerreeng trail (Camperdown to Port Campbell)
- Mount Leura Road
KERBSIDE WASTE COLLECTION
Kerbside waste collection services in Terang, Noorat and Glenormiston will operate as normal, although collection will commence earlier.
South-west Victoria is also experiencing a severe heatwave.
Severe heatwaves can be dangerous, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell.
Take steps to protect yourself and others by keeping cool, staying hydrated, planning ahead and checking in with others.
If a cool space at home is not available, seek accommodation with friends and family.
Recognising early symptoms of heat-related health problems and taking action is crucial. Learn more at www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/campaigns/survive-heat
