Correctional officer charged after being paid to smuggle contraband into facility

A correctional officer has been charged following an investigation into the introduction of contraband into a correctional facility in Sydney's north-west.

Earlier this month, detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit established Strike Force Bundawarrah to investigate reports of corrupt activity by a male correctional officer.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested a 26-year-old man at a correctional facility in Sydney's north-west about 7.30am yesterday (Sunday 19 April 2020).

Officers seized tobacco, prescription medication, methylamphetamine (ice) and heroin from the man's underwear.

Shortly after, a vehicle was searched at the correctional facility, where detectives seized documentation and ammunition.

The man was taken to Riverstone Police Station and charged with six offences including;

  • agent corruptly receive benefit (x2),
  • holder of public office misconduct,
  • knowingly deal with proceeds of crime,
  • unlawfully bring etc anything into place of detention,
  • possess ammunition w/o holding licence/permit/authority.

Police will allege in court that the man, who is a correctional officer, trafficked two packages into the facility in return for financial benefits from the family members of inmates.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Blacktown Local Court on Monday 6 July 2020.

The man's employment has been suspended.

Investigations are continuing.
