A correctional officer has been charged with corruption after allegedly supplying tobacco to an inmate of a Western Sydney correctional facility for money, NSW Police say.
The Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) established Strike Force Iraga as an ongoing investigation to identify potentially corrupt behaviour of employees at a correctional facility at Parklea.
As part of their inquiries, strike force officers identified suspicious activities of a female corrections officer.
Just before 11am yesterday (Sunday 10 December 2017), the female officer allegedly supplied tobacco to an inmate at the facility.
Following a search of the inmate, correctional officers located and seized tobacco.
The 40-year-old female officer was arrested a short time later and taken to Riverstone Police Station.
She was charged with two counts of introduce contraband to a correctional centre and agent corruptly receive benefit.
Police will allege in court the woman was paid to bring the tobacco into the facility for an inmate.
The officer, who has now been dismissed, was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Blacktown Local Court on Monday 29 January 2018.
Investigations under Strike Force Iraga are ongoing.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation the introduction of contraband into correctional facilities to call Crime Stoppers.
