Cost of Living thrills and spills

Giant lizards and even bushfires can't stop Debbie and Peter Jenkins from enjoying life. Now with the rebates the couple accessed through their Cost of Living appointment at Taree Service NSW Centre, life is a little more comfortable and adventurous.

Peter was burnt in a bushfire as a volunteer firefighter. Pores in his skin were damaged, making it difficult for him to keep cool in summer. Peter and his wife Debbie were able to claim the Medical Energy Rebate, Life Support Energy Rebate and NSW Gas Rebate to help reduce the cost of air conditioning in summer and heating in winter.

"Without the help of Service NSW, we would never of known about any of these savings," Debbie explained. By the end of our hour appointment, we had saved $700 plus per year. It has taken so much stress of us it's like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders."

The National Parks Exemption Card had also helped the Jenkins to explore the outdoors more and share quality time with their family.

"We actually used our National Parks Card just this last weekend. We had a family day with our daughter and her kids at Diamond Head National Park," Debbie added. The only thing was, we spent a lot of time up on the picnic tables because there were these gigantic lizards fighting. I think one was pregnant," Debbie said as she laughed. "It was beautiful. You can go camping, or go rock fishing, 4-wheel driving, lots of things.

"My husband was in the Bush Fire Brigade. We love nature and the card lets us visit the parks all the time. It's great. It allows us to have family days and help teach the grandkids about nature and show them how beautiful everything is."

There are more than 40 rebates and savings available as part of the NSW Government's Cost of Living initiative. Appointments with a Cost of Living Specialist are free and face to face. Appointments can be made online via the Service NSW website, calling 13 77 88 or in person at a Service NSW centre.
