Ambassador Edward Stevens welcomed home 4 Chevening scholars who completed master's degrees at leading UK universities in 2024 to 2025.
In the autumn of 2024, Eduardo Solano, Karina Sánchez, Daniela Chaves and Daniel Wattson left Costa Rica to begin an extraordinary chapter in the United Kingdom. They returned a year later, not just with master's degrees from world-leading universities, but with new perspectives, lifelong friendships and experiences that will stay with them long after graduation.
At a welcome home reception hosted by Ambassador Edward Stevens at the British Residence, it was clear that the value of a Chevening Scholarship cannot be measured simply by the qualification awarded. Yes, these scholars studied at institutions including the University of Edinburgh, LSE, UCL and the University of Warwick, but what they gained extends far beyond the classroom.
Living in another country, engaging with people from every corner of the world and tackling some of today's biggest challenges alongside future leaders changes the way you think. It builds confidence, resilience and curiosity. It creates networks that span continents and often last a lifetime.
That is what makes Chevening such a remarkable programme. Every year, it brings together talented professionals from around the world, giving them the opportunity to learn from one another while experiencing the diversity, innovation and academic excellence of the UK. When they return home, they bring those experiences with them, as people ready to contribute in new ways to their communities, workplaces and countries.
Ambassador Edward Stevens said, "Evenings like this remind me why Chevening matters so much. Eduardo, Karina, Daniela and Daniel have each had an experience that will shape the rest of their careers - and through them, the UK's relationship with Costa Rica grows stronger. These are exactly the kinds of connections that endure."
For the UK, supporting Chevening is an investment in relationships that endure. For Costa Rica, every returning scholar strengthens a growing community of alumni who are helping shape the country's future across a wide range of sectors.
We are proud to welcome Eduardo, Karina, Daniela and Daniel home. Their year in the UK may have come to an end, but their Chevening journey is only just beginning.
Applications for Chevening Scholarships are open to professionals with leadership potential.
