Council Adopts Disability Inclusion Action Plan

Griffith City Council has formally adopted its Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) at its Ordinary Meeting on Tuesday 16 June, reinforcing its commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible community for all.

The four-year Plan outlines the actions Council will take to improve access, inclusion and participation for people living with disability across Griffith.

The Plan has been shaped by strong community input, with feedback gathered through a range of engagement activities. This included Council Café sessions, the International Day of People with Disability event, Aged Care Expo, consultation with local service providers, and ongoing input from Council's Disability Improvement and Access Committee (DIAC).

The DIAP focuses on key areas including improving access to buildings and public spaces, enhancing communication and information, supporting inclusive employment practices, and strengthening community awareness and participation.

To ensure the Plan is accessible to all, Council has also developed an Easy Read version of the Plan. This simplified format uses clear language and visuals to support people with intellectual disability and others who benefit from more accessible information.

Councillor Shari Blumer, Chair of the DIAC, said the adoption of the Plan is an important step for the community.

"This Plan represents the voices of people with disability and those who support them," Councillor Blumer said.

"It's about removing barriers and making sure everyone in our community feels included, valued and able to participate fully in everyday life."

Residents are encouraged to view the DIAP and learn more about Council's commitment to inclusion.
