The Hills Shire Council has teamed up with Alive and Kicking Hills to help residents aged 60 and over stay active, social and healthy through a fun, low-cost soccer program.
Alive and Kicking Hills is a local over-60s soccer group that meets from 8.30am every Tuesday at Ted Horwood Reserve in Baulkham Hills, giving older residents the chance to keep playing the game they love in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment.
The program launched in August 2025 and has already grown from just eight players to around 20 regular participants.
As part of the partnership, Council is supporting Alive and Kicking Hills with access to local playing fields and sponsorship to help keep costs low.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said Alive and Kicking Hills was a great local initiative and one Council was more than happy to support.
"This is a fantastic example of Council supporting grassroots programs that keep our seniors active and connected," Mayor Byrne said.
"Programs like Alive and Kicking Hills remove barriers to participation and make it easy for older residents to look after their physical and mental health.
"Staying active at any age is important, and this program proves it's never too late to get involved in sport."
The idea behind Alive and Kicking Hills was simple according to co-founders Bill Renton and Keith Pierce - keep people moving, connected and enjoying sport well into later life.
"It's about staying active and having a laugh," Mr Renton said.
"We have players from all walks of life aged from 60 to over 80.
"There's no heavy contact, no pushing and no fouls - just running around, keeping fit and catching up with mates over coffee afterwards."
Alive and Kicking Hills is open to anyone aged 60 and over, with players ranging from their early 60s to their late 70s and beyond. Many participants are retired but still keen to stay fit, social and involved in their local community.
