Council applauds international recovery help

Townsville City Council has thanked the international visitors who have helped residents rebuild after the monsoonal weather.

These included five Canadians who have assisted the community as part of not-for-profit organisation Samaritan's Purse.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said families have appreciated their help.

"It is heart-warming to see international visitors out in the community helping flood-affected residents," Cr Walker said.

"They've helped uninsured families get their houses ready to rebuild.

"It's amazing to have people from the other side of the world supporting Townsville."

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the monsoon has united the city.

"We've seen a lot of neighbours helping flood-affected friends and families but the work of these international visitors has been amazing," Cr Doyle.

"They've put their holidays on hold to help strangers rebuild their lives by removing walls and clean up their properties.

"It's wonderful to have the help and support of people from other countries."
